Earlier this year we reported on plans by the UK Intellectual Property Office to introduce reduced fees for obtaining and renewing registered designs. These are now scheduled to come into force on 1 October 2016.
At the time of filing applications, the most significant fee reductions will be seen for applicants utilising the online filing system rather than the paper filing system where the fees remain largely unchanged. For designers bringing out seasonal collections, or for designers with a number of variants on a theme, this will provide a very cost effective mechanism to protect a broader range of designs.
And for those who already own registered designs, the official fees at renewal are being dramatically reduced. Fees currently increase significantly for each 5 year period of renewal, from £130 for the first renewal to £450 for a final renewal period. These will now be reduced to £70 for a first renewal and £140 for the final renewal.
These changes are the latest in a number of changes being introduced by the UK Intellectual Property Office to improve the attractiveness and accessibility of design protection for UK designers.
