Protection
One of the strongest ways to protect the appearance of your product design, product packaging and get up is through design registration. In the UK, from 1 October 2014 it became a criminal offence to intentionally copy a design protected by registration. In the UK and EU design protection can be sought for a short period after public launch, but this is not the case in many other countries so it is strongly advisable to seek protection prior to making a design public. Registered design protection should be sought in each country where you intend to sell your product, and it is certainly worth focusing on those commercially important countries where it would cause a problem to your business if someone was to copy your product design. Renewal
Design registrations are generally valid for a maximum period of 25 years, depending upon the country, with renewal fees payable usually every 5 years.
